There are some contraindications and precautions associated with the use of laser therapy and we will discuss these with you in detail prior to commencing any laser treatment plan. For example, laser therapy is contraindicated during pregnancy, and additional precautions may be required if you have other skin conditions or infections. Generally treatment is safe for most clients.
Laser uses concentrated light to to kill the fungus and prevent its growth. The cell wall of the fungi contains melanin which is the target chromophore. The Laser effectively penetrates the nail and generates heat at the site of infection beneath the nail plate. The fungal cells are destroyed (before your healthy cells are damaged), preventing continued growth of the fungus.
As the laser works by selectively targeting the fungal cells and heating them up, you will feel a mild warming sensation around your toes during the treatment however it is relatively painless with minimal discomfort and once the treatment is completed no further sensation is experienced.
Precare & Aftercare
Pre-care instructions:
1. Apply an antifungal solution to the affected nails for two weeks prior to laser treatment. In addition, topical application of urea cream will help soften the nail plate, aiding in occlusion to provide a water chromophore.
2. Keep your toenails clean and free of any nail polish or decorations and ensure that all nail polish is completely removed prior to treatment.
3. Trim your nails as short as possible to allow the laser to penetrate more effectively.
4. Wear clean socks and shoes on the day of your appointment to minimise the risk of reinfection.
Post-care instructions:
1. Continue to apply the antifungal solution and urea to the affected area, massaging onto and between all toes. The antifungal solution should contain clotrimazole 1%, tolnaftate 1%, terbinafine 1%, butenafine 1%, miconazole 2%, or undecylenic acid. Remember with anything in life, consistency is the key so make this part of your daily routine.
2. Disinfect your shoes at the end of each day using an antifungal spray or powder. Rotate your choice of footwear and do not wear the disinfected shoes for 48 hours to ensure infection is minimised.
3. Keep your nails clean and trimmed and sterilise your nail clippers prior to and after every use.
4. Always wear thongs rather than bare feet, even if your at home and particularly in pubic places such as pools and change rooms.
There is no downtime following a laser treatment for toe nail fungus and you can return to your normal day to day routine immediately.
On average, 6 treatments are required for effective eradication of the toenail fungus. This will depend on the severity of the infection and the number of infected nails as well as your age and general overall health. Treatment can be performed every two to four weeks. Remember toenails grow slowly so improvement will take time as the nail bed grows out.
